Feel The Burn: How To Douse The Flames When Your Taste Buds Are On Fire!


We are a chilli loving nation, and we love them hot peppers—Seasoned, fried, curried, cured, pickled or just plain raw! Then there are some varieties with ‘radical’ capsaicin—an insane amount of capsaicin—a compound present in chilies, which imparts it the pungency. If you’ve struggled with calming down the burning sensation after chopping or eating chillies (or mistakenly rubbed your eyes or face after handling chillies) here’s how to beat the burn.

Dairy products:

Cold milk is a tried and tested remedy. Milk has a protein called casein, which acts as a detergent on capsaicin, dissolving it to reduce the pain. Other dairy products that can soothe your burns are cottage cheese, yoghurt or sour cream.

Citrus fruits:

Fruits like lemon, tomatoes and oranges have citric acid, which helps to cut down the effect of jalapenos on your taste buds and skin. Tomato-based juices or apple cider vinegar is also a good option.

Oil:

Olive oil, vegetable oil or coconut oil are great for combating the burning sensation in your mouth or on the part of skin that came in direct contact with the chilli. The oil and fat help in dispersing the burning sensation. Coat your palms with a small quality of oil before chopping chillies to avoid burns. If you want something yummy, go for a scoop of peanut butter for alleviating the burn in your mouth.

Alcohol:

Hard drinks or spirits like vodka, scotch, whiskey, gin, etc. help remove capsaicin. Beer does not make to the list, as the water content in it is high, which makes it less effective to wash off the burning oils.

Other products at your rescue-

Baking soda: The paste of baking soda and milk or water can help you treat the burn for a short period of time. The combination draws out the heat and provides a cooling effect on the affected area.

Aloe Vera: The gel drawn from the aloe vera leaves is commonly used for treating burns because of its analgesic and anti-septic properties.

Sweet water: Mere water cannot help you get rid-off the burns. Instead, rinse the area  with water mixed with sugar or honey. 

Starchy foods: Starchy foods like rice, bread and potatoes may not wash off the chilli oils, but can provide comfort.

Use gloves in case you wish to chop uncountable chilies for making those yummy pickles. With these remedies, you will never have to deal with burns.
