What Makes the Mangosteen a Powerhouse of Nutrients?

What is it…A member of the Garcinia mangostana family, mangosteen is a purple fruit that has been revered by the locals of south east Asia for centuries now. Parallels are often drawn between mangosteen and India's very own 'kokum'--but the duo are similar only up to the point of belonging to the same family.

Why it’s Good for You: Mangosteen contains 40 xanthones out of the 200 odd known xanthones that occur in nature, thereby making it one of the xanthone-rich substance on earth. Now what is Xanthone? These are coveted phytonutrients which have anti-oxidant properties that neutralise the damage caused by free radicals in an increasingly polluted environment. Their anti-inflammatory nature fights diseases like cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.

Amongst other things, Mangosteen is also known to maintain intestinal health, aid in weight loss, strengthen the immune and respiratory system, reduce skin rashes, bring down hypertension, stimulate red blood cell growth, improve ovarian function and overall gynecological health, apart from being an anti-parasitic, anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-depressant and anti-pathogenic!

Eat it… whole (as the rind contains most of the goodness). If you’re buying it in juice form from some of the super stores, look out for added sugars and other preservatives.
